When it comes to faith and politics, there is no shortage of opinions on how our faith informs our voting. But, what if when it comes to politics, we're having the wrong conversation? What if the Religious Right has it wrong and what if the Religious Left has it wrong? Mike Goldsworthy launches us into a new conversation regarding faith and politics. Without providing all the answers and set conclusions, he challenges us to think differently about the role of politics and the Kingdom of God.

What on the surface reads like a set of sermons (culled from Mike Goldsworthy's 2012 sermon series) turns out to be a balanced lesson on rhetoric, reason, and the social contract - not only for Christians, but for anyone interested in the politics of the United States. In other words, there is much here for everyone to mull over and discuss, Christian or non. It is a swift read at fewer than 100 pages with a larger type and a timely read, not only for the 2016 election season but, I imagine, for many election seasons to come. It is perfectly suited to small group readings or book clubs; if you are looking for something for the fall, as we get deep into the election, this would be a great group read because it is not about providing answers, but starting conversations. And if you are teaching high school and college age students, the tone is both respectful and light (considering the subject matter). The kind of book that could make you a better person. At the very least, a better rhetorician.Product details

In God We Trust? When the Kingdom of God and Politics Collide edition by Mike Goldsworthy Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Mike calls us to have the right conversation. Around our country and the world conversations over issues and candidates are taking place. The conversation s that need to take place are Who is my Lord? Who is my hope in? How then am I to live? Join me in this conversation.
This was a great book to reframe our thinking on how we as Christians should approach political issues with others. It's about Christ and living His life of love, not taking an argumentative stance on the issues.
Quick read with good insight towards a proper understanding of politics as it relates to an overall "kingdom" mindset. Challenging and thought provoking, it gives some great tools when discussing the subject with fellow believers and would make for a wonderful book discussion group topic. Highly recommended!
Takes a new look on politics from the lense of Christianity. Many aspects are easier said than done not only for Christians but all people.
A fantastic book about what it means to follow Jesus in this political landscape. Some of this authors words have been a literal answer to prayer for me - helping me to understand answers to questions I have been wrestling with for a while now.
I would like to share a quote from the book, that especially impacted me
"Jesus is not just concerned about the ends we achieve or the results we get, but he is entirely concerned as well with the means by which we get there, because to Jesus, the means matter...
That's why the kingdom is not ushered in by typical means— with power, coercion and force. That's why Jesus doesn't give in to the systems of the world to achieve his kingdom goals. That's why he instead goes to the cross to achieve those goals. That's why he goes to the symbol of shame and disrespect and dies the death of a common criminal— because to triumph in the kingdom looks different."
Great writing that is sure to spark some dialog within your own self as well as change the way you view and enter political conversations.
Today, during this election season (and any other) it's hard to try to determine who may be correct with their line of thinking and positions. It assists in getting the right mind set and illustrates how having the right attitude can make all the difference, We try to support those candidates who we feel can make the most/best change for what we believe to be positive. But is political activism the answer? This book is a very easy read. The author, Mike is actually my pastor (so I may be a bit biased) and as I read through this book, it seemed as if I were listening to him talk. His writing style is awesome. I so recommend this book!
Is our God political? God is beyond that, beyond measure. Why do parties cause us to fear so much relating to our faith? Most of all, how do those things then relate? Politics and Jesus are a bit of a touchy subject, however Mike Goldsworthy manages to artful deal with both subjects. Goldsworthy draws us into a conversation, and that is the point, a point he most wonderfully makes. We are beings who think and feel, not pawns of a larger political agenda. His writing is crisp and conversational, his tone is never judgmental, but inviting. He writes to a Christian audience, but with an easiness and an openness that people from all faiths can enter this conversation. Ideally, all people of all faiths would read this book and understand what a reasoned and measured Christian approach to politics looks like. Goldsworthy refuses to tell you exactly what to do, as he puts it you are invited into a conversation. The book is short, making for a brisk read, which will leave you wanting more, but the more in this case comes from thoughtful discussion and looking back. I was challenged to look back at how I view the political sphere and how that view relates to my relationship with God. A most timely book in a turbulent political season.
